Netherlands

Leiden, a city in the Netherlands, is known as the "City of Discoveries." Its historic center is like a giant open-air museum that is perfect for exploring on foot. On a walk through this lively and oldest university city in the Netherlands, you can discover many typical details: beautiful canals run alongside the streets, drawbridges cross over them, there is a large old windmill, and stately mansions.

Famous waterways
As a canal city, Leiden is known primarily for its idyllic waterways. The Oude Rijn river flows through the city, and Rapenburg is also part of Leiden, the most popular canal in the Netherlands, where King Willem-Alexander lived as a student. Leiden has the second-most bridges and waterways in the country after Amsterdam. Especially in the summer, many boats ply the canals.

Leiden's landmarks
One true landmark is the famous wall poetry: The "Gedichten op muren" have been scattered all over the city. There are a total of 120 poems written in many different languages on the walls of houses and decorated with street art.
The Burghügel, which was built in the 12th century as a refuge, offers a beautiful view of the entire city.

Rembrandt's hometown
Leiden is the birthplace of Rembrandt van Rijn. You can follow in the footsteps of the master on the Leiden Rembrandt Route. The Young Rembrandt Studio, where he learned to paint in the early 17th century, is also worth a visit.
The Museum Lakenhal houses impressive art collections with works from the Golden Age and contemporary art.
