11 Photo Tips for Your Photography Holiday

1. When the sun is shining, pay attention to the aperture

The manual aperture setting in bright light is usually the best compromise to save image details. Automatic exposure programs sometimes weaken in this discipline and distort the colors.

2. Take a photo with the shutter open

This rule applies to objects in motion. Because the wider opened the aperture (= small f-number), the shorter the shutter speed. So the movement does not blur, but can be frozen.

3. Open aperture = blurred background

The more open the aperture, the lower the depth of field, which blurs the background wonderfully.

4. Closed aperture = large depth of field

The depth of field increases as the number of f-stops increases (i.e., the smaller the aperture is). With values over 8 to 11, it is not only possible to focus on the foreground. It should be noted that the shutter speed or the ISO number must be increased.

5. Photo tip: Use the Golden or Blue Hour

The so-called golden hour of photography takes place twice a day. It is the hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset. This means: The sun is low, dives everything in orange-red light, causes long shank and creates a nice atmosphere. The sun, »the photographer's little helper».

6. Lunch break

The bright midday sun is often shunned by photographers, as the strong light can swallow dark parts of the picture and burn out bright ones. Therefore, take your siesta and go back to work in better lighting conditions.

7. Photo tip: Be careful with your flash

Be careful with the direct flash, otherwise faces become easily overexposed in contrast to the background.

8. The ISO number

If you prefer a flash, you should first open the aperture and then turn to shutter speed and ISO setting.

9. The angle is important

Sometimes it is better to change sides, to look for a higher point or even to go to your knees to get a good picture. A good picture composition is sometimes the art of omission.

10. The background is just as important

The background of a picture should usually be quiet and not too colorful, otherwise it distracts the viewer from the actual subject matter. In landscape photography, the rule is the other way round, because to give your photo shots a certain depth, there is the sentence: "foreground makes image healthy”.

11. Photo tip: RAW

If your digital camera can save images in RAW format, i.e. uncompressed, you should use this. This way, your pictures can be edited much better later on the computer.
