15 Art Museums Across Europe - You Must Visit

We thought it would be nice to have a list of interesting art museums in different locations across Europe, where we also offer our courses! We've picked out our favourite museums at 15 different locations. And maybe this blog entry will also help you to decide which destination will be the aim for your next creative vacation?

Castle Belvedere - Vienna, Austria

The Belvedere is not only a magnificent baroque palace, but also houses one of the most valuable art collections in Austria - with major artworks by Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka. Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663-1736), successful general and art lover, built the Garden Palace Belvedere of Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt as a summer residence - at that time just outside the city. The picturesque baroque palace consists of two castles (upper and lower Belvedere) and houses today Austrian art from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Mimara - Zagreb, Croatia

Since 17 July 1987 there has been a renowned art museum in Zagreb: The ‘Mimara’ shows on three floors in a former school in Donji Grad the gigantic art collection of Ante Topić Mimara (1898 - 1987). The namesake painter had traveled the world a lot. He was also art-restaurateur and collector and returned at the end of his life with his art treasures home to Zagreb. Mimara was considered a well-read man, who had absorbed art in museums and galleries around the globe and had regularly acquired works of art from different eras in antique shops or auctions. His passionate patriotism finally encouraged him to donate his collection to the Croatian people.

Veletržní palác - Prague, Czech-Republic

At its time, the largest building of its kind, in the world and in Prague the first functionalist building from 1928 serves today the purposes of the National Gallery. The unique collection of Czech and international, modern and contemporary art includes, for example, an exceptionally valuable collection of French and European art, including unique works of well-known painters, such as Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Auguste Renoir, Vincent van Gogh, Gustav Klimt and many more.

Faaborg Museum - Fyn, Denmark

Comprehensive art experience since 1915 - The Faaborg Museum is a total work of art with painting, sculpture, architecture and furniture art - and this connection is far from being ordinary. The beautiful building features patterned mosaic floors and vibrant colors, columns and a wealth of hallways and spaces. Together they create an art experience that knows how to fascinate.

Musée du Louvre - Paris, France

With almost 10 million visitors a year, the Louvre is the most visited and therefore most popular museum in the world. In the former Parisian city palace with its recognizable glass pyramid in the entrance area, you can also admire the world-famous Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci. You should bring a lot of time to watch all art treasures of the museum. The Musée du Louvre has an exhibition space of approximately 60,000 square meters. Regarding this big size of the museum, it seems that you could spend weeks there and still would not have seen all the huge collections of sculptures, paintings, relics from almost every epoch.

Pergamon Museum - Berlin, Germany

As the only German representative, the Pergamon Museum has made it among the 25 best museums in the world. Situated on the Capital’s so called ‘Museum Island’, the cultural building houses the Museum of Antiquities, the Museum of the Ancient Near East and the Museum of Islamic Art. Attractions such as the Pergamon Altar, the Market Gate of Miletus and the Ishtar Gate made the museum famous worldwide.

National Gallery - London, UK

Trafalgar Square in London is home to the famous National Gallery, whose collection of state paintings comprises approx. 2,300 works from the 13th to the 19th centuries, making it one of the world's most important art museums. The gallery is home to Britain's national collection of Western European art, and the extraordinarily long list of exhibits includes masterpieces by Vermeer, Van Gogh, Seurat, Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci and Rubens.

Viannos Gallery - Crete

The gallery of Viannos is located in a restored olive oil mill in Keratokambos. The vision of founder Savvas Petrakis became reality in 2008 when the Gallery was inaugurated by the President of Greece. It houses more than 200 works by very famous Greek artists such as Fasianos, Mitaras Parmakelis, Kessanlis, Tsoklis, Rokos etc. In addition to the exhibition, it includes a gallery with significant published works - most notably a republication of Ioannis Kondilakis' books.

Reykjavík Art Museum - Reykjavík, Iceland

Reykjavík Art Museum is the most popular and largest art museum in Iceland. It is housed in three distinct buildings in central Reykjavík, that are called Hafnarhús, Kjarvalsstaðir, and Ásmundarsafn. The museum exhibits work from Icelandic and international leading artists in modern and contemporary art: Erró, Kjarval, and Ásmundur Sveinsson. In addition, the Museum holds various exhibitions by Icelandic and international artists. The Museum is also a venue for young and promising talents.

Irish Museum of Modern Art, Ireland

The Irish Museum of Modern Art is housed in the rooms of the restored Royal Hospital. There are always exhibitions of contemporary art. Not only the collections of the museum are shown here, but also the works of young artists. It shows works of contemporary artists among a collection of long-dead artists, so that you can admire the development of art at a glance.

The museums of the Vatican - Rome

Vatican City has much more to offer than just the Sistine Chapel - especially for those who are passionate about art. Masterpieces by some of the greatest artists who have ever lived can be admired in the exhibitions across the city's museums. The museum houses 22 very impressive sections. The best known are the Museum Pio-Clementino (classical sculptures), the rooms of Raphael (large paintings by Raphael) and the portrait gallery of Pinacoteca.

The Lofoten Museum - Lofoten, Norway

It is not an art museum, but the landscape of the Lofoten also brings enough art with it! However, you should take a look at the history of the Lofoten fishery in one of the best preserved fishing village estates in the Lofoten. At the bottom of the medieval town of Vågar you can find the stately main building that is dated back to 1815. Authentic fisherman's cabins and boat houses with Nordland boats can be admired there. The museum displays clay-slideshows about the Lofoten fisheries as well as harbor docks and lighthouses along the Norwegian coast, traditional crafts and a pretty garden with historic shrubs.

Serralves Museum - Porto, Portugal

The Museum of Modern Art Serralves in Porto, is located in the city of Porto in a beautiful park on Rua D. Joao de Castro 210. The building was designed by the architect Alvore Siza Vieeira. This modern architect is one of the most famous architects of Portugal. The exhibitions in the Museum of Modern Art Serralves change several times annually and range from photographs and sculptures to paintings.

National Art Museum - Bucharest, Romania

In the majestic former royal palace from 1812 on the Revolution Square is the National Museum of Art of Romania, opened in 1947. The gallery of European paintings and sculptures includes some magnificent old masters from the private collection of King Charles I - including works by Rembrandt, Rubens, El Greco and the Impressionists. With three large art collections on three floors of the palace, it is now considered the most important art gallery in Romania.

Museo del Prado - Madrid, Spain

Crowds of visitors flock to the Museo del Prado in Madrid every year. The museum is one of the most important art museums in Spain. It shows the best classical masterpieces of the Spaniards from the collections of its former monarchs. All greats Spanish painters are represented there. More than 3000 paintings are exhibited here, among others you will find artworks by Rembrandt, Botticelli, Caravaggio, and Albrecht Dürer.
