Fantastic Plein Air Oil Workshop In Italy: Review

Exploring new cities and capturing beautiful moments in oil colors, gives your creative vacation a very special kind of experience. Katerina Ring is one of our professional painting tutors specialized in authentic landscapes and scenes from the beautiful Italy. In her classes, she puts a lot of emphasis to capturing your personal interpretation of place, life and energy. On non-excursion days, you will enjoy demo’s and coaching from Katerina while creating your own artwork. With magnificent views and painting locations, tasty food and the fantastic tuition by Katerina Ring, your holiday will enrich you in every aspect!

Cheryl Peters, a very kind artist, who for the first time attended Katerina’s painting class and has never painted with oil paints before, is completely thrilled. Together with Katerina Ring and a small group of other painting enthusiasts, she describes the 10-day painting tour all over of Cortona and the nearby areas as an ‘outstanding experience’:

"Katerina Ring's plein air oil workshop in Cortona was fantastic! She is one of the nicest, most talented people I've ever met. For ten days, we painted all over the town of Cortona and the surrounding area, as well as traveling to Frances Mayes' beautiful estate, Bramasole, and several hilltowns. Some days we just stayed at our B&B, Sole del Sodo, and did still life with fall fruits and pumpkins. It was my first experience with oils, as I usually paint in acrylic. The principals are the same, but the feel is quite different. Kat's technique is quite different from my own. It's very loose and once you put the stroke on you let it be. NO BLENDING ! Which is something I had a very hard time doing. Therefore many of my colors are a bit muddy. We all learned at lot at this workshop, about painting and about Italy.

A word about this type of painting trip. First of all, you get to places not usually on the standard tour with free time to wander. Second, it is usually a small group - we had nine painters plus the instructor. The group is usually housed in nice B&B's and takes most meals together. The informal setting promotes lots of interaction and friendship. But you can stay back to paint or read or just rest of you like. Third, you get a chance to try new things and new techniques while enjoying yourself in wonderful surroundings. My husband loves to go along on these trips. He makes sure the wine is fit to drink -- and helps me lug my stuff around.

This trip had one more bonus for me. The painters were all women. Not that guys aren't talented and fun to be around. I've been to many a mixed workshop. But a group of women can be special. We were from all over the U.S. and Canada. Some like me, have taken up painting in retirement. Others, are still working. One was brand new and had only done the Sip and Paint thing. Our ages and backgrounds vary widely. Some have lived and traveled all over the world. We talked of so many things in addition to painting - as only women can. We shared and we supported and we became friends. And that is a very special thing. Many thanks to Kat Ring for bringing us together. Many are already planning to paint with Kat again next year in Lucca.“ - Cheryl Peters
