Portraying Inner Significance

People have always been and still are enchanted by the art of portrait painting, of capturing the expressions, moods and characteristics of a person – or an animal. Each living creature has their own personality, each their very own traits and features. Portrait painting has been popular for ages, from the beginning of the history of painting. Also, if there is one genre that lived through every kind of ages and artistic phases, it is the one of portrait-painting.

A well-executed portrait is expected to show the inner essence of the subject (from the artist's point of view) or a flattering representation, not just a literal likeness. As Aristotle stated, "The aim of Art is to present not the outward appearance of things, but their inner significance; for this, not the external manner and detail, constitutes true reality." Would you expect to be able to depict portrait painting in such a philosophical way? You could call it “personality-painting” rather than “portrait-painting”, which might make it sound even more difficult to master. You do not want to upset or displease your portrayed subject with how you depict him or her. When you want to paint, for instance, your own pet, you want to capture their bubbliness, their loving, loyal eyes.

As you might have noticed, there are several things you need to remember when capturing an individual, may it be a person or an animal. Not just capturing lines and colour, but personality and liveliness. Do not worry; there are people who are able to teach you about everything you need to remember when it comes to points like that.

For example Jo Pickering! Jo is an experienced UK artist and teacher who loves to produce portraits of any kind.
