Urban Sketching in Würzburg

06.06.2022 - 10.06.2022 Würzburg | Ian Fennelly urban, sketching, watercolor, watercolour 999 EUR

Explore Würzburg with pen and watercolour. Professional urban sketcher Ian Fennelly will show you techniques and methods that help you to create your own lively and atmospheric sketches. Learn to find your own individual style and fill your sketchbook step by step. Inspired by the charm of the beautiful Venetian scenery you’ll be able to capture your favourite travel memories with brush and pen.

Würzburg will show you what Germany can offer. It is an episcopal town and a college city at the same time. Prince-archbishops coined the past of the city, the university is coining its present. Vibrant student life takes place between the palatial relics of the past: the residence of the prince-archbishop (which belongs to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage now), one of the oldest stone bridges of the world („Marienburg“) and an innumerable amount of church steeples – so many perfect Urban Sketching motifs! The local people are home-loving and like to cultivate their traditions. They are famous for their great hospitality and sociality (You can fact-check this at one of the many wine festivals in autumn). So why don’t you try the Franconian lifestyle and enjoy the hearty specialties of the local kitchen in a quaint wine bar – next to sketching… a wonderful place to spend a few days!

Ian will teach you about the composition and the structure of the sketch, how to recognise clear perspective and how to train your eye to see what is important for your work, and reduce it to the essential elements. All of this and so much more will be taught and developed in many drawing and sketching sessions together. The course aims to deepen your skills in sketching, drawing and watercolouring, to exchange views, to capture the atmospheric scenery of Würzburg, and to have fun.

Learning goals:

  • train the eye to see shapes, value and colour in outdoor scenes
  • become comfortable sketching in public
  • learn to draw standing up
  • become an urban sketcher and start reaping the benefits of seeing the world in a new way

All the workshops and demonstrations will take place in Würzburg. Ian will choose the most suitable and inspiring subjects to draw: from churches to street live to arcs around the city. Each session will cater for varying standards of ability and confidence, and you will be stimulated throughout the workshops by stories and little demo sketches to make the experience more rewarding and stimulating.

The offer is only course, so you would have to choose and book a hotel yourself. If there are any recommendations, please let us know via email!

Target group: (all levels) This course is meant to be for beginners as well as for  advanced learners.

Number of participants: 6-12

Where do we sketch/draw?
We will draw and sketch mainly outside en plein air, so you should not mind walking longer distances on foot. Nevertheless, if the weather is bad we usually have access to the studio inside, where we can draw and sketch, too.
