To sum it up: The perfect place for Urban Sketching with Ian! With his empathetic, storytelling, calm yet precise teaching… he and his sketching and Bamberg's scenery just work out brilliantly together.

Ian will teach you about the composition and the structure of the sketch, how to recognise clear perspective, and how to train your eye to see what is important for your work and reduce it to the essential elements. All of this and so much more will be taught and developed in many drawing and sketching sessions together. The course aims to deepen your skills in sketching, drawing and watercolouring, to exchange views, to capture atmospheric scenery of Vienna, and to have fun.

Learning goals:

become comfortable sketching in public
learn to draw standing up
become an urban sketcher and start reaping the benefits of seeing the world in a new way

All teaching sessions and demonstrations will take place in Bamberg. Ian will choose the most suitable and inspiring subjects to draw. Each session will cater for varying standards of ability and confidence, and you will be stimulated throughout the workshops by stories and little demo sketches to make the experience more rewarding and stimulating.

Target group: (all levels) This course is meant to be for beginners as well as for advanced learners.

Number of participants: 6-12

Where do we sketch/draw? We will draw and sketch mainly outside en plein air, so you should not mind walking longer distances on foot.

Ian Fennelly studied painting at Wimbledon School of Art and gained a 1st Class Honours degree. After graduating Ian worked as a drawing office manager for several years which gave him the opportunity to develop his drawing skills. Ian has always been attracted to the urban environment, and he loves the feel of a busy city. He paints very quickly and loosely, but it must happen within the context of an accurate drawing, which holds the paint in. Ian is married with two children and lives near the coast in Hoylake, on The Wirral. He works from a light and airy studio overlooking the beach and often work on several pictures at once which enables him to plan the colours, and allows different ideas to bounce off each other. Ian Fennelly uses photographs and on site drawings to plan compositions and draft out ideas. Part of this information gathering is travelling to different cities which is really important. Ian's inspiration for urban sketches comes from visiting places, spending time there, meeting people and getting honked at by buses. But when he sketches, the subject is just the starting point; it’s the battle on the paper that’s really exciting. Colours, shapes, lines and patterns are all jockeying for position, while the water flows within the textured grooves of the heavy Fabriano paper. This is what’s really exciting. The image will inevitably come through, sometimes in spite of his efforts, because it is sketching itself that really inspires him.

Transfer is not included in the price. If you are planning to arrive with public transfer or if you have limited mobility, please let us know and we will find a solution. We will check if the course is suitable for you. However, we can assist you to form groups to diminish transfer costs. We strongly advise you not to book your flights before you have not received the information that the minimum number of participants has been achieved.
